About Paul Russell

In July 2015 I joined the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science at Gothenburg University, where I am Director of the Gothenburg Responsibility Project (GRP).

I will be based at Gothenburg half-time for the following ten year period (2015-2024). During this period I will continue, on a half-time basis, in my position as Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia.

My appointment at Gothenburg has been made possible thanks to a major grant from the Swedish Research Council for the international recruitment of leading researchers. The Swedish Research Council's recent announcement concerning this grant can be found here.

At Gothenburg my responsibilities will be confined to PhD supervision, research and the organization and direction of the Gothenburg Responsibility Project. The web site for the GRP can be found here.

See also my personal web pages.

Research Interests

My interests cover the areas of free will and moral responsibility along with various topics in early modern philosophy. Within the area of free will and moral responsibility I am particularly interested in the challenge of scepticism and theories of responsibility that appeal to reactive attitudes or moral sentiments. On the subject of early modern philosophy I am especially concerned with the philosophy of David Hume and how his philosophy relates to problems of religion and atheism.

In addition to my position at the University of Gothenburg, I am also a Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, where I have been teaching since 1987.

For further information regarding my publications, presentations, teaching and other such matters please see my personal web page.
